Not a Scrub

This weekend, I was pleasantly surprised when I received my order of complimentary VistaPrint business cards. However, it was not the cards that I was most excited about. It was the holder. See I have been carrying around a Starbucks "Sugar-Free Chewing Gum" container as my business card holder for the last 3 months. While my cards did tend to have a minty fresh smell to them, it didn't do me a lot of favors in the "Please take me seriously." category.

Thankfully, VistaPrint stepped up to the plate and delivered (within 1 day) a set of new business cards. I'm very happy with the cards (they look and feel fantastic) and have been showing off my card holder regularly to anyone that will pay attention to me.

How did it happen? Twitter of course. I was making fun of myself for having a "scrubbish" card holder when Jeff Esposito the Public Relations Manager for VistaPrint decided to step up and deliver a complementary set of business cards and business card holders. So thank you very much to Jeff and VistaPrint.

While thumbing through my cards and thinking about all the times I've thrown down the Starbucks case and exchanged cards I came to this conclusion: Image only matters to people who don't have their own. In essence, if you treated me like garbage because I opened up a makeshift case then you probably weren't worth the time to talk to anyway.

One of the key seperators between great marketers and those that fail? Ability to find new talent and then the allow it to grow/prosper. You constantly need new ideas, methods, and diversions to make sure that you are doing the best thing possible. Marketers are like sharks; if we stop swimming we drown.

This is why I always make an effort to allow new voices to be heard at The Lost Jacket. I want to hear what new people have to say and why they think what they do. Only through that kind of exposure can I learn new things effectively (and I'm assuming the same works for you). It keeps the ideas discussed here fresh and never allows for complacency.

So what do I want to accomplish with this post? I want to hear your voices. Introduce yourself, say hi, delurk! I want to connect and learn something from you.

It's amazing how twitter can facilitate marketing by allowing you to engage brands directly & get things for free!

In the ever-relevant words of TLC: "I don't want no scrub, a scrub is a guy that can't get no love from me, hangin' out the passenger side of his best friend's ride, tryin' to holla at me..."

My mother suggested I use an Altoids case as a business card holder. I scoffed at the idea, thinking "who would take me seriously"? But you brought up a good point. Whoever DOES scoff at it isn't worth knowing.

True enough. I'm in love with the new one though...doesn't get stuck like the starbucks one did.

You're right, the person who'd scoff at your using that gum container as your business card holder wouldn't be worth knowing. I say, kudos on reusing the container, reinventing it for a new use. Great for your differentiation, too - very memorable. Now that's over. The price of free, I guess.

You CANNOT pick up Vistaprint orders in person. That's my beef.

Mainly, because for the past 5 months I had been commuting between Maine and Boston. I used VistaPrint because I did not actually have an address in Boston yet (I now do). I also had no idea that you could do this in person? That's pretty cool.

Please explain to me the logic of paying money to Vistaprint or any company when they're located within a 30-mile radius? I've never understood that, which is why my latest business card batch is from a local firm that enables me to come in and walk out with my cards, avoiding shipping charges and/or lag time. I realize you didn't pay, but just sayin.

So...your cards won't smell minty fresh anymore? Major downfall right there buddy, may I suggest stuffing a few mint leaves in your new card holder to retain the freshness. Having said that, Vistaprint's customer services rocks. I ordered a set of 500 cards from them awhile back, screwed up the design a bit (and they did too a bit), and they gave me a full credit and sent me new cards.

Haha...so did. Thanks for stopping by Aly (and I revisited the anchor text).

I think perhaps you should have worked in a few more links to "VistaPrint". And perhaps used "business cards" as the anchor text for just one of them. ;) That snarky comment should tell you all you need to know about me. As if you didn't already know. HAHA!
