Great stuff guys - we're thinking along the same wavelength - my most recent post ties into these themes nicely. When you're entering the blogosphere, don't focus on bringing down the 'competition' - if there really is competition when it comes to blogging - focus on being better, providing unique and fresh ideas. You don't have to talk about new unheard of topics - but give your readers that 'AHA!' moment that makes them remember who you are, gets them to subscribe to your feed, and come back again and again. Cheers to both of you! A pleasure as always reading what you both are cranking out!

Seth - Excellent point. I think that asking questions is great. And speaking of Lewis Howes (comment below), he shared this great quote with me, "Need help with something ? Ask. It’s not an admission of weakness, but shows your determination to succeed."

Ari - I think it depends both on your status and the medium in which you're participating. Focusing on someone with more posts than you makes more sense in a forum, than on a blog where someone with similar traffic, posting frequency, etc. might make more sense. Also, if you're a fresh out of the gate newbie, you're probably not going to create any clamor right away with others that are also fresh. Aiming for someone a little higher up gives you something to aspire to, challenge yourself, someone to ask questions, etc. Once you've reached that plateau you can aim higher.

Your point about finding a mentor is the single more influential way that me, as a newbie, has been able to penetrate the cult culture. My mentor, @lewishowes has been so critical in helping me grow, learn, and become active in the social media space.

Good post. Adding value is perhaps the biggest point I see here, but I'd also propose that asking questions is key. Not only does it show that you're open to learning and being able to build on your value, but also it stimulates conversation where others above you can have the opportunity to share/teach/mentor. No one wants to hear anyone just preach (whether they are at the top or bottom), but asking questions that add to increasing the value of those you interact with as a whole is more attractive. Thoughts?

Interesting how you suggest folks climb the ladder vs mingling with people on your rung. There is a tendency that the higher one climbs the less willing one is to look back. Moreover, why focus on interacting with those with hundreds of posts more than you, rather than those who are at equal or lesser posting frequency than you? The concentric circles one has may be comparable, so focus on quantity, not quality. :)
