Company Culture

Here's a cold harsh reality check for people thinking that all Generation Y wants to do is sit in a field and help people or do no work: most of us are actually extremely savvy, self directed people who just want to take over the world and understand the grunt work needed to accomplish this.

I'm just as willing to go through a wall doing direct mail for you as I am passionate about inbound marketing. However, explain why your method is better. If you summarily dismiss my idea and don't even bother to check it out yourself/do your homework, how can we respect your decision?

Should all companies shift to a set of rules that are unproven, poorly thought out, and hastily organized? Hell no. If you are making boatloads of money with your methods, awesome. I'd love to sit down and listen to  how you are so successful. (If you think I'm going about this all wrong feel free to call me: 207-752-2960 <-Real Cell #)

I'm not pushing for changes in corporate culture based on laziness, a desire to help people (it's nice...but where's the ROI?) or some new age garbage that was the result of helicopter parenting.

Suffice it to say 95% percent of us are rational individuals who want to go out there and kick ass for you. We just need to know why your way is better. If you can prove it to me or my generation, we will sit down, shut up and eat dirt until we are successful within your model.

The ruthlessness, desire to succeed, and willingness to work until our eyes bleed is there. I'm young and crazy enough to work 18+ hour days (and do on a regular basis) so just give me a little insight into whether or not what we are doing is worthwhile. I'm results driven and will do anything to get them.

So, if you think you are safe from those soft headed, over inflated, non-work doing, lazy Gen Y's. I invite you to keep thinking like that. That kind of attitude is great for a person going nowhere higher then middle management. I'll stick to shooting for the moon (and doing the work that it takes to get there).

Passion for your work is a tricky thing. Smother it and you waste it. Let it grow to big and you could end up with a lawsuit. My vote: take the nurturing approach and enjoy the results.

Absolutely. Dumb people are dumb people. (I just tend to get grouped in one particular generation)

A lot of the "Generation Y" people you describe ARE just people who sit around and flirt on Facebook. People who can really get stuff done in new media are quite rare, compared to the number of people who just passively consume it and wate time with it.

It's not just a generation, it's a mentality... a level of digital consciounsess that can be awake or slumbering at any generation

I agree. Nailed it. As long as we know why we are doing something a certain way, with evidence as to how it is the most productive, efficient, effective method and use of our time - we will do it and thrive at it. But there is nothing wrong with always looking for the most productive, efficient, and effective method for things - and we know that both the company and the employer benefit from this.

We want to feel our opinions are listened to, because at least according to my experience, we often do have a better method or avenue that hasn't been explored yet.

Don't squelch innovation; encourage it.

Are we still categorizing generations? That was so Gen X.

Nice piece. By the way, found a typo but am not going to share it here. Will DM you with it on Twitter.

Later,

Jeff

Nailed it. We just want to know why. If we know we will do anything we can to accomplish the goals/tasks set before us.

Nice article. Just like a RPG, walking back and forth killing the same monsters for experience is grunt work. But if the gamer knows why he is doing it and that he is leveling up to beat the boss, he does it with passion and enthusiasm.

This enthusiasm will be lost if there is a manager who says, "Don't ask questions. Just kill the same monsters over and over again for 3 hours a day."

Our generation has information at our finger tips, so we want to know things, not just do things.
