33 Kickass Ways to Get Your Blog Noticed

I don't have a problem getting noticed. But perhaps you do? This weekend at PodCamp4 (#pcb4) Adam Pieniazek and I decided to host an impromptu session called "Social Media Schemery". One person showed up (Thanks Tamsen!).

However, I felt that since it seemed to be such a hot topic for a wide variety of up and coming bloggers (and was a question I heard asked most of the day). Thus, without further adieu "33 Kickass Ways to Get Your Blog Noticed":

1. Write compelling content. Seriously, might want to get on that.

2. Take a contrarian position. Get off my lawn!!!

3. Ask a power user to submit your site to a social bookmarking site like Digg. Easy as pie.

4. Mommy bloggers rule. Praise all the mommy goodness.

5. Mommy bloggers suck. Out an angry mommy.

6. Weddings!!!! These are kind of super-awesome.

7. Use auto-tune. I'm on a boat!

8. Do something awesome. Diet Coke=Win.

9. Create an award.

10. Link out to relevant content. Relevance=Good.

11. Start an argument.

12. Write about beards.

13. Own a niche. I own my lack of a jacket.

14. Use pop culture references.

15. Swear. Adds to authenticity...or something?

16. Get arrested.

17. Be Lisa Barone.

18. Say ridiculous things on Twitter.

19. Write a How-To:

20. Piss people Off. Works for me.

21. Declare that something is dead. Wired does it...why can't you?

22. Construct Awesome Headlines.

23. Write linkbait. Lots and lots of linkbait.

24. Regularly participate in guest posts.

25. Call out someone or something who is already unpopular.

26. Be Penelope Trunk.

27. Be snarky, funny or anti-authoritarian.

28. Use ridiculous pictures. (See Above)

29. (Omit someone important from your blog post.)

30. Utilize puppets. Because lets face it, puppets are awesome.

31. Be Chris Brogan.

32. Publish things that potentially could get you sued.

33. Write Lists. Crap.

Obviously these are tongue in cheek. However, each method described here actually works. The ability to be seen amongst the crowd has proven invaluable to my own blogging success. I hook people with the funny/snark and reel them in with the hard hitting PR and Marketing analysis.

  • Amusingly accurate. (I often go to bed at night hoping to wake up as Chris Brogan or David Armano. I think maybe I need to grow a beard. ) In adidtion to commitment, consistent quality content, and relevance, some traffic building tricks really are needed.

  • Great list, though some of them might be a little too tongue in cheek for me to authentically pull off (feels like #1 should be the cardinal rule of all blogging!)

    I've gotta say too, I'm amazed how well #9 works. Like, truly amazed. The #BlogCrush series I have over on the Webb started as a way to learn more about other blogs and build community by letting people know about the great bloggers out there. Now I have people Tweeting and emailing about how they want to become the next #BlogCrush and it's included on Top 10 lists. That was NEVER something I expected when I started.

    Though you DO have to be careful. I recently received an email, rather tongue in cheek (I think) asking why I didn't have any "ugly guys as a #BlogCrush." I think this would also include a recent posting where all the folks are like "Of course the girls have a crush on you...aww...you're so cute...blah blah blah" and I feel like maybe some people lost the point! :-)
  • Haha, yeah the award thing is ridiculously easy to pull off and extremely effective in terms of people's egos. Mainly because everyone wants to see their name up on another blog :).
  • Respectfully, if you think it is "easy" for me to write those every week or Ryan Stephens to compile his Top 10 then I think I may have misjudged...

    I will agree some are weak (heck, possibly you think mine are...) but I would venture to say that any of those examples you list can be done really well or really poorly.

    Again I this it all falls back to item #1. While the stroking of people's ego is an easy cross-link, taking time to show appreciation to bloggers who deserve it will never be a "joke" to me.

  • You know a few weeks ago I would have laughed at "write a How To." Us aspiring novelists hate to stoop to guide writing. But us aspiring bloggers should take note. I wrote a bunch of How To's on eHow over the past 6 days and I've gotten traffic from I don't know where.... Guess I can take a hint.
