Seen any malicious links lately?
Been surprised when you click and are brought to CNN or NY Times?
In case you're wondering, no, your Norton Anti-Virus software didn't just become self-aware. You've probably just stumbled upon the beauty and genius that is ShadyURL.
ShadyURL takes your nice, happy url and turns it into something like this: http://5z8.info/peepshow_s2c6c_how2pipebomb. (Ha, I wouldn't feel comfortable clicking that either.)
Here's the thing about this service: it's actually quite brilliant. Underneath its veneer of juvenile delinquency ShadyURL houses a viral powerhouse.
Bit.ly may own the shortening market, but ShadyURL owns the messing with your friends market by a landslide.
ShadyURL's Social Triggers:
1. It's meta.
ShadyURL would not exist without the proliferation of URL shorteners currently in existence. It's existence is derived from a basic understanding of urls, spamming techniques and internet humor.
2. It's simple.
You can process a link in 30 seconds. Low barriers for entry are paramount for success. A Sartre play isn't going to get 15 million views on YouTube, so play to the crowds.
3. It's ridiculous.
Let's be honest, this is a funny concept. It wouldn't be successful if it weren't. It's amusing, stupid and way too much fun to ignore. Plus it messes with your friends...
4. It's risqué.
Danger sells. Why else would gangster rap have had such success? It's the only industry in which going to jail can have a positive effect on your career. After all, how else are you going to tick off those suburban parents?
5. It works.
In the age of good enough? This is an element that is overlooked far too often.
Can you think of any other recent campaigns or marketing efforts that have used similar techniques? I'd love to hear about them.
*Note: Use your ShadyURL knowledge for good and not evil. Wait, who are we kidding...
