The reason social media/networking is so popular is because there is no wrong way to 'do it'. There can be a million different ways to use social media and not one of them is 'wrong'. If I want to Tweet about my love for Chris Isaak's 'Wicked Game' – I do it. If I want to share my latest post on business philosophy, I can do that too. We're able to connect and share information in so many different ways and that's what keeps in interesting, educational, and inspiring.

As you said – all you can do is get out there and jump in. It's up to you to make your own rules.

Making your own mistakes is the best way to learn anything. Sure it means you'll have to fall but when you get back up you'll remember to watch out for that pothole that made you trip the first time.

In most cases, even if you comb through and prepare yourself, you'll likely fall so best to prepare yourself a little and then dive right in.

As for the personal tweets (what you're eating / doing etc.), they help show your personality but should be done in moderation. I'm on twitter to learn about what you're good at and what interests you, but also to learn (a little) about you too. Those mundane personal tweets help show the person behind the twitter icon.

One of the best ways to get good at something is simply doing it. Some people get lucky to get started early on. Companies like Microsoft, Facebook, Amazon, and Digg all started because someone decided to give it a try and never looked back.
