I started this blog with the intention of sharing my unique take on marketing, PR and social media. It's been a pretty cool ride. I've met great people, expanded my knowledge base, and was even able to launch a consulting company back in December. However, this past Monday I participated in a really cool thing: I helped get David Spinks a job as a Community Manager at Scribnia.
That doesn't happen everyday on many blogs. It is a first for me here and a is development that I am really excited about. What does it mean for me? People are listening, learning and contributing to this blog everyday. Obviously, I'm hoping this is just the beginning. I've only been seriously blogging since October and Daniel Honigman had to pull teeth to get me on here and on Twitter (which I signed up for early last year). Now I can't quit doing either -- and won't, because I love both so much.
Blogging gives me a voice and allows me to interact with people on a different level then I had before. My professional and personal development has surged forward and my professional skills have grown considerably. The ability to interact and talk directly with luminaries in my field just kicks so much ass.
I still get excited when someone like @ScottMonty, @Jaffejuice, @TDefren @JasonFalls, @DMullen, @Chrisbrogan @Dannybrown, @RachelAkay, and @ShannonPaul reply to me. Does this make me a HUGE marketing/pr nerd? Totally. But the growth I've experienced (at very low cost I might add) that has come from interacting, reading, and even meeting some of these people offline has been huge for my career.
Interesting anecdote I'll share quickly: When I was working at my old b2b job, I consistently was shot down. 90% of my initiatives never saw the light of day. (You learn how to pitch really really fast with this kind of rejection.) One of my favorite moments of rejection was when I brought in Todd Defren's social media press page. I couldn't even get an RSS feed approved. Needless to say, it was time for me to part ways. So I poured myself into The Lost Jacket full bore and have never looked back.
I'm hoping this is not the last time someone gets a great opportunity from this blog. In fact, I'm hoping it is just beginning. The feeling I got from helping David out was awesome and I want to get that feeling again. So feeling lucky? If you want to guest post just hit up the contact form. I'd be more then interested to hear your ideas. (Not going to lie, consulting offers would be pretty nice as well.)
