SMJBoston Recap

by Stuart Foster on March 11, 2009

Jeff Pulver

Just wanted to make sure I said a big thank you to Jeff Pulver for allowing me to come and listen to some cool people talk about some really interesting concepts and ideas. Plus he paid for the Reginas...which pretty much made my day (I'll be honest if anything involves me and "Reginas" in the same sentence it will be awesome).

Big Lesson of the Day: Get my ass on video. To many people are moving into the space now. I need to separate myself and expand my audience. @SteveGarfield and @MSMamet really drove this point home for me. I have an opportunity to really start doing something cool with video (granted it's about 5 years to late...but I'll manage).

My big sticking point at the moment: How do I get my presence in the room? The answer: Video. I can virtually assert my ass-kicking ability directly into your skull (I've been waiting to say something like that for a really really long time). Plus it might finally get me a speaking gig! Seriously, I'm available for Bar and Bat Mitzahs. I'm entertaining in that awkward loud smart kid way (although supposedly that is supposed to be great for business right? *crickets*).

Oh and I should probably get a camera...cause I'm having to borrow pictures from various Flickr streams.

Arguably my first real exposure to a brick and mortar social media event was the New Marketing Summit hosted at Gillette Stadium. I've come a long way. Biggest signifier of changes in my knowledge/viewpoint: Seeing Chris Penn speak. First time around...eh? To be honest, I didn't have much of a clue who he was, what he was talking about, or why he called himself a ninja.

This time around I was blown away by Chris. Mainly, because a) I knew who he was. b) His energy kicks ass. c) He got me interested in metrics on a level I never thought possible. It basically motivated me to go back and listen to his earlier podcasts and try and learn every possible thing I could from him. Chris, I'm warning you now. I'm probably going to make it my mission to talk to you at the next one of these meetings/conferences. Just too damn interested in learning from you.

Wow and I finally got to talk to @CCMaine. Who will reportedly kill me if I don't make it to a Tweet-up in Portland next Thursday. Looks like I'm probably going. (Hoping it's at Gritty's).

Also great to see @DougH, @JoselinMane, @Pistachio, @Srdill and @BostonMarketer.

The day concluded with a marvelous Margarita's Mexican Meal. Hung out with @JakeCacci, @MaThurrell, @skalik, @Alexa and @RobertCollins. I subsequently had a massive caffeine crash and slept until 12...I guess not sleeping for two days might do that to you ;) .

Looking forward to the next one people. (Tomorrow, I return to a name-dropping free post on The Lost Jacket).
