For the past 6 months I have been a regular user at Reddit ...and I often have met with fleeting success. The barometer for success is difficult to gage, although the mantra of "content is king" remains the basis for most of the celebrated front page stories. However, unlike Digg the friend aspect of Reddit (and gaming potential) are extremely low and not conducive to network building and content promotion.
The Reddit system is set up to limit conversation to comments and emails you can send manually within the interface. No shouts or any other encouraged communication...just good stories. Which is great if you are interested in pushing linkbait and MSM (mainstream media) stories.
However, if you are trying to promote content (like myself)...you are between a rock and a hard place. You may not think that what you are promoting is spam however...to Gen Y (myself included) anyone selling anything is immediately written off as spam. Immediate...reactionary...and an instant down vote. Who says we aren't patient? Hehe.
The solution (experiment) I have set up is one that directly targets my niche. I created my own Reddit. BCC Research where I promote press releases, content and general information for those people who love the science and market research that those products provide. I've built a small but respectable following of 106 fellow redditors and provided a nice place for my niche to come and enjoy stories and information geared towards them. This could not happen if I submitted those stories/releases in the main section of the Science Reddit. They would get voted down or maybe only garner minor votes. With the creation of this community I have found my niche on Reddit, and a wonderful place to supply back links to my parent website. A win-win for all.

Not only is this is a smart idea, but a great way to promote your new Reddit. I think I might join this subreddit.
